Original version of the Copland Clarinet Concerto gets its premiere in Florida.
On June 15th 2024 at the Sarasota Music Festival, Charles Neidich performed Copland's Clarinet Concerto in its original 1948 version with the Sarasota symphony led by maestro Jeffrey Kahane, giving the Florida premiere of this iconic work of the clarinet repertoire.
In 1999, Charles recorded the world premiere recording of his reconstruction of the original version of Copland's Clarinet Concerto with I Musici de Montréal for the Chandos Records label. In the liner notes Charles wrote: “In order to capture the excitement of Benny Goodman’s jazz clarinet, Copland originally let his imagination run free, unfettered by any concern for the technical limitations of the clarinet. I realised it was natural that Copland, after his initial inspiration, would revise his concerto to conform to the technical standards of the time, but now, I felt, was the time to restore the work to its outrageous brilliance.”
